Year One...done!

I can't believe it's over. Every year of school goes faster and faster! Only ONE more year until I do my first surgery and only two more years until I'm in clinics acting like a real doctor. Seriously freaky.

I have to say I really enjoyed first year. I liked first semester way better than second (I'm partial to dogs rather than large animals) but it was really neat to dissect over 10 different animals this semester! I set a goal to get straight A's this semester and I met that goal!

I know a few pre-vet people read this, so my word of advice is never, ever get behind. Seriously. It can be painful to make yourself keep up because sometimes you just need a break (you should definitely take breaks though), but if you do a "little" each day, you will be fine. And never put sleep last. All night-ers are not necessary if you just keep up! By the way, if you have a specific topic you'd like me to post about, feel free to leave it in the comment section. It can be anything - undergrad advice, applications, which schools you should apply to....whatever! I'll probably be making these posts throughout the summer anyway, but if you pre-vets have special requests I'd love to help you out!

Anyway, we had an awesome end of the year party to celebrate. The whole backyard was decked out in lights and tiki torches, a sweet bar, ice luge, games to play, a fire pit, and a bbq. Inside there were more games, food, fun music, and good people. I had an awesome time kicking off the summer with my classmates. The next morning I headed out for the drive home with Monica and two second years. It actually wasn't a bad drive at all, I was expecting it to feel a lot longer than it did but we put on audio books and just cruised. I had Rhyley in my lap the entire time and occasionally she really got on my nerves (panting, fidgeting, etc) but she was a lot better than she was when we drove to California thank God. Now that she's driven cross country once, and half the country twice maybe she's finally used to it?!

It feels so good to finally be home relaxing! I literally stayed in my pajamas ALL DAY yesterday, totally cool with it. And today I worked out, dyed my hair, laid out by the pool, watched the Ru Paul's Drag Race marathon...yes, this is the life.

One more day of relaxing and then I'm heading to Orlando to catch up with friends Thursday and Friday, and then I'll be in Fort Lauderdale for the weekend. So excited!

T-minus 10 days..

..until my first year of veterinary school is complete! I can't believe I've already been out of undergrad for a year now...how quickly time flies!

Last week I was kind of a nut case. I basically came to a point where learning anything new was physically painful, and just prioritized what I thought was most important. So I definitely learned NOT to procrastinate if I don't want my head to explode! It's crazy though because despite that fact that I was beyond sleep deprived, over caffeinated, and feeling loony by the end of last week, I had to literally FORCE myself to lay down and take a nap after my exams, rather than study for the next week. It's hard to make myself relax knowing there is so much to be done. But it was a glorious 4 hour nap, and I even went out and was social on Friday night :)

Anyway, we've finished our calf dissection, dissected a fetal pig yesterday, and we're doing a chicken tomorrow (also did a turtle last week, and a snake the week before!). I think it's pretty safe to say I will pass on being a food animal vet. And an equine vet. Yep. Although I do have a thing for goats!! What do you think about a marine mammal, small animal, goat vet? Possible? I think so... :)

So what's left you say? Well I have a bovine theriogenology final today, an epidemiology final tomorrow, and integration exam Thursday, and then 4 more finals next week. I'm teetering on the edge of an A (89.94 at the moment) in Physiology, and with it being a 6 credit class I REFUSE to get a B! That will destroy me! So my main focus starting Wednesday will be ruminant digestive physiology (not my favorite topic) which I basically need to get a 95 on. I CAN DO THIS!

I know, my life is incredibly fascinating, right? Study, sleep, eat (occasionally). So intriguing. As a side note, I decided to rent a room in a condo, where I'll be living with a roommate that works at Gulf World. I can't bring Rhyley though :( It seriously makes me sick to think about being without her for two months! I hate even leaving her for school! Yes, I realize I have a serious issue hahah but I don't care. She's my best friend and I don't really trust anyone with her. Over Christmas break my dad was going in and out of the house and left the door cracked. I was calling her name and she didn't come, so I got up to check on her. I see the door open, run outside, and she is half way to the street!!!! If I hadn't been there, I guarantee she would be dead right now. Going to be so sick with worry all summer. But it really is best for her (as long as my dad doesn't kill her) because I could be working anywhere from 30-60 hours a week...more if I want to get a part time job. It's not really fair for her to be trapped at home all the time. My mom is at home 4-5 days out of the week, so she'll at least be with her most of the time. Plus I will be paying 300 in rent, rather than 1200 (even though she really is worth the extra money). Sigh.

Alright, time to review some bovine rectal palpation and whatnot. Yeah, it's a glamorous life I lead.
